Why is my garage door so loud?
Noisy garage door? The sound tells you what's wrong
Garage doors are not silent, but a door that has changed its noise is telling you something specific has worn or come loose. The sound narrows it down quickly: squealing is nearly always rollers or dry hinges, grinding is usually the opener gears, and a single loud bang is almost certainly a spring — which is the one that needs attention immediately.

A single loud bang followed by a door that will not lift means a broken torsion spring. Those springs hold enormous tension even after breaking, and every year people are seriously injured trying to release one. Do not attempt it. Do not park under a door with a broken spring.

Squealing or screeching
Dry rollers and hinges. Nylon rollers dry out and the bearings start to bind. This is wear rather than danger, and it gets worse until the roller seizes and drags on the track.

Grinding from the motor
Usually the opener's drive gear. Chain-drive openers use a plastic gear that strips over time, and once it goes the motor runs while the door does not move. It does not repair itself.

Rattling and vibration
Loose hardware — hinges, brackets, track bolts working free over years of cycles. Cheap and quick to put right, and worth doing before the movement wears the holes oval.

A single loud bang, then nothing
That is a torsion spring breaking. People describe it as a gunshot or something falling in the garage. The door will now be extremely heavy and may not lift at all.

Popping or banging while moving
Often the door sections binding as they flex, or a bent track forcing the rollers. Worth looking at before something bends further.

- Can I just spray lubricant on it?
- On hinges and rollers, a garage-door-specific lubricant genuinely helps and is worth doing twice a year. Never use WD-40 — it strips grease rather than adding it. And never lubricate the track itself; rollers need to roll, not slide.
- Is a noisy door dangerous?
- Usually not on its own, but it is a warning. Noise means something is wearing, and the parts that wear on a garage door are under a great deal of tension.
- Why is my door louder in summer?
- Heat thins the grease in rollers and bearings, and metal expands enough to change how the sections sit. Arizona summers are hard on door hardware and doors are noticeably noisier by August.
- Would a belt drive be quieter?
- Considerably. A belt-drive opener is close to silent compared with a chain, which is worth it when a bedroom sits over the garage. It does not fix worn rollers though — those are separate.
